Commissioners ask staff to research green burials, vault rules and pricing

At the March 18 meeting board members asked staff to research policies and pricing related to cement vaults and green burials. Doug Sheehan asked about cement vaults and green burial practices; commissioners asked staff to return with more information on whether green burials can occur in existing lots (pine box, no vault) and how pricing should address temporary storage in the vault when burials occur elsewhere.
Sheehan said the cemetery is storing one body in a vault that "has to be out of the vault by the end of this month" and suggested raising storage prices if people use the vault without burying on site. Penny Wu agreed to bring additional information to the next meeting so the board can consider policy and price changes. Bruce Schmidt noted some green burials occur in wooded areas and said the board needs more information before setting rules.
The item was a direction to staff—no regulatory changes were adopted at the meeting—and will return with information for possible rule changes and price adjustments.
