Council hears public support and staff plan for Rock Creek restoration project

Councilors held a public hearing on bids and contracting for Project R-2026, Rock Creek restoration, after city staff described the scope and schedule.
City engineer Jason Craft said the work will widen and regrade eroded stream banks in the arboretum, create safer 2:1 slopes and benches, and re-establish vegetation. "So it's a simple project... we estimate, like, about $400,000," Craft said, adding the city will rebid the work after finding a very low bid and minor errors in published bid dates. He told the council the work would likely occur this fall into early winter with final establishment next spring.
Residents who addressed the hearing said the restoration matters for safety and education. "...it was such a great program to teach children about the out of doors," resident Lainie Lass said, describing past youth programs along the creek and urging protection of shorelines so children "don't go sliding down in the creek."
The council received the testimony and approved a related resolution to engage legal services and to proceed with rebidding and a construction order; staff said rebidding should not affect overall timeliness for the project.
