County approves $304,500 DEQ resilience grant contract to study school radio coverage and essential services

County Manager Brian Alligood told commissioners the grant covers engineering to evaluate essential services, and specifically to study radio penetration problems in school buildings and design for repeater or repeater‑style solutions so first responders can communicate inside heavily constructed school spaces.
Alligood said the scope is to produce planning and engineering recommendations so the county can apply for Phase 4 funding or build the repeater systems once there is a plan in hand. Commissioner Hood Richardson questioned the spending on the study and whether it would obligate the county to construction; Alligood said the study would be a planning step and the county would pursue additional grant funding or build the system only if feasible and funded.
