Beaufort County opts in to additional national opioid settlement; expected local share modest

County Manager Brian Alligood briefed the Board on a new component of the national opioid settlements covering six additional regional distributors and dispenser entities. He said the combined settlement from those defendants totals $97,625,000 and — after the national allocation formula — the county would receive a small amount, which he estimated at roughly $14,000–$15,000 for Beaufort County.
Alligood summarized the opt‑in paperwork and explained that, as with prior settlements, the county must formally opt in to receive a share of the funds. County Attorney Amanda Sasnett had reviewed the participation form and the Board approved a motion to allow the chairman to sign the electronic opt‑in form on behalf of the county. Alligood said the county will follow any stipulated processes for public‑use and allowable programmatic uses in accordance with the settlement terms.
