Committee explores West Hill ice rink idea but flags cost and maintenance

The Ludlow Recreation Committee reviewed early plans for a proposed West Hill ice rink and heard that a local ski operator expressed willingness to help with boards and possibly loan skates.

Parks & Recreation Director Nick Miele summarized options, and committee member Frank Provance said he "reached out to Bruce out Okemo inquiring about ice skating and Bruce’s response is open to supporting the rec departments effort to have an ice rink by providing the boards and discuss loaning the ice skates." Frank also reported that Erin Ladd has been handling the Act 250 permitting work.

Committee members discussed site choice and timing. Scott Baitz cautioned that a response from Vail could be slow and suggested the town plan for next winter rather than expect immediate installation. Penny said she would prefer the rink be located at Dorsey because "it is in the village." Nick gave a rough setup estimate of "around 10K." Joe Gurdak warned that "maintaining an ice rink is tough" and noted operating and skate-provision costs would add ongoing workload for staff or volunteers.

The committee discussed alternatives and resources: Frank suggested a public ice-skating trail he had seen elsewhere as a lower-intensity winter option, and members noted potential in-kind support such as tree donations and local volunteers. No formal decision was taken; staff were asked to continue exploring partners and permitting status.

The committee may return with cost estimates, a maintenance plan, and clearer partner commitments at a future meeting.
