County attorney Perkins explained the Board of Equalization appointments are statutory, annual appointments made by circuit court based on board recommendations and noted the nominees had served in 2022 and 2023 and had indicated a willingness to serve again. The recommended names included Linda Bailey (Bacons Castle District), Doris Ellis Jackson (Carislead District), Thomas Byrd (Dendron District), Anthony Washington (Claremont District) and Alvin Cheatham (Surry District).
Separately the board approved changing the stipend from the prior hourly stipend to a $160 per‑meeting payment to bring the county into closer alignment with nearby jurisdictions. The motions to recommend the names and to increase the stipend were both approved by majority voice vote.
