Board approves school and emergency grants, funds added for animal control amid conflicting transcript amounts

Finance staff asked the board to appropriate a $5,000 STEM family event grant awarded to Cumberland County Public Schools and said the funds require no local match. "It is my recommendation that the board approves the appropriation request in the amount of $5,000 to Cumberland County Public Schools," the finance presenter said. The board moved the consent agenda item forward without public objection.
The board also approved funding to cover a newly filled 0.333 animal-control officer position. County staff described the request as covering salary and benefits for Dec. 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The staff memo listed the total as $41,727; however, when the chair read the motion the figure was stated as $41,007.27. The board recorded a motion and subsequent "aye" votes from board members present, and the appropriation was approved. The transcript contains the inconsistent dollar values; county staff should be consulted for the official accounting record.
Separately, the board accepted $1,000 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management for emergency-services light-screen monitors and appropriated $700 awarded through the Virginia Fire Services Board to the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department; staff said these awards were deposited and remitted to the grantee without local match.
Next steps: the school division will receive the STEM funds for the family-night program as outlined in the grant, and county finance will post the appropriations.
