Resident urges Draper to couple proposed school on former eBay parking with dense housing

During general public comment, James Longstaff of Sandy asked the council and planning commission to consider adding dense housing to plans for the large parking area adjacent to Draper’s FrontRunner station, where Canyon School District is exploring a school at the former eBay site.
Longstaff said he frequently sees the parking lot largely empty and urged the council to ‘‘put some pressure to maybe also build housing there as well’’ because the location is adjacent to transit. He asked the city to consider loosening height restrictions and reducing minimum parking requirements for that parcel to enable denser, transit‑oriented development.
Mayor Walker responded that the area is already zoned for maximum density and unlimited height and that market forces and property‑owner decisions (including the Canyon School District for that parcel) determine what gets built. He told the speaker to raise concerns with the Canyon School District board, which controls the property.
