Ludlow board to consider vault requirements and green burials at March meeting

Sexton Doug Sheehan said the cemetery has never set a clear policy on requiring cement vaults or on allowing green burials, and noted a recently approved mausoleum purchase with no written authorization. He provided dimensions for the mausoleum (two side-by-side crypts about 100 inches long and 106 inches wide) and said vault costs start at about $1,500.
Commissioners asked staff to add the topic of vault requirements and green-burial policy to the March 18 agenda so the board can review other cemeteries' regulations and draft a local policy. Sheehan said green burials can be more expensive in practice — families sometimes dig the graves themselves or pay about $3,500 for digging services — and commissioners said the financial and operational impacts should be evaluated before adopting policy.
