The Surry County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to set this year’s personal-property tax rate at $3.75 and to keep the county’s real-estate tax rate unchanged at $0.71.
Pierce moved to set “this year's personal property tax rate at $3.75,” and to leave the real-estate rate unchanged at 71¢; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote after public comment and brief board discussion. A separate motion to postpone consideration until May 8, offered by Cowen, failed for lack of a second.
Rollins, the budget presenter, had earlier explained that the board must set rates to permit the treasurer and commissioner to proceed with required June billing for personal property. The chair called for the vote and declared the motion carried; the board did not record individual roll-call votes in the transcript.
