County legal staff and planners presented three draft ordinances intended to address abandoned manufactured homes, junked or nuisance vehicles, and derelict vessels. Christina Smith asked for the Board’s guidance on next steps and suggested a workshop so the legal team could refine language and enforcement mechanics. Commissioner Ed Booth and others said the item is large and deserved a breakout session; the board set a special workshop for Monday, March 23 at 5:00 p.m.
Commissioner Hood Richardson pressed for firmer language around liens when the county spends money to remove abandoned property. “There needs to be something about mandatory liens when the county pays money to have these things disposed of,” Richardson said. County attorney staff noted the draft language mirrors other jurisdictions but agreed to review and return with proposed language changes (including replacing “may” with “shall” where appropriate) and to clarify complaint intake mechanics so the public understands how to initiate enforcement requests.
County Public Works also gave a brief update on convenience-site upgrades: Buck Jones site was wrapping up and will be followed by Pantego and then Five Points, staff said.
