County engineer: quarry crushing, coring, and Highway 1 closure set for December

County Engineer Ryne Thornburg briefed the board on multiple secondary roads items: quarry crushing completion in early December, coring at the county farm in early December, an agreement with Cessford Construction for roadstone at Comanche Quarry, and a planned Highway 1 closure north of Birmingham Dec. 10–17, 2024 for pipeline work while a detour agreement with Iowa DOT is negotiated.
Ryne Thornburg, Van Buren County engineer, updated supervisors on secondary roads work and notifications Nov. 25. Thornburg said quarry crushing by the contractor should wrap up in the second week of December, and the next round of coring at the county farm is scheduled for the first week of December. He also noted a list of rock/roadstone types produced by the contractor was reviewed by the board.
Thornburg reported an agreement with Cessford Construction Co. to produce and place roadstone at the Comanche Quarry for county use. He also informed the board that Highway 1 will be closed north of Birmingham from Dec. 10 through Dec. 17, 2024, for pipeline work; Thornburg is working on a detour agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation for use of county roads during the closure.
