ZBA grants variance for LED fuel-price sign at 12 River St

On May 5 the Jaffrey Zoning Board of Adjustment granted Peard Properties, LLC a variance (4-0-0) to install an LED fuel-price sign at 12 River Street in the General Business district.
Owner Jacob Peard told the Board the new sign would allow staff to update pricing remotely and avoid using ladders to change numbers. Peard said the proposed sign is only slightly larger than the existing sign and “will be mounted so that the bottom remains 7½ feet above the ground.” He also told the Board the gas and diesel portions of the sign can be turned off after hours while the heating-oil display may remain illuminated 24 hours a day.
Board members unanimously found the application satisfied the five variance criteria. Chair Walter Batchelder observed that this station is one of the few in town without an illuminated price display, and Member Laurel McKenzie said the upgrade would improve employee safety. The Board waived a site walk and approved the variance (motion by McKenzie, second Jevne).
The application sought relief from the sign ordinance (Section XVI, 16.11.5 and 16.11.12) to permit an illuminated LED price board. The record notes other nearby businesses have similar digital signage and that the proposal will not alter the site layout.
