Residents complain about sharp assessed-value increases and urge no raises for commissioners

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, Bob Peterson and Chris Alexander raised concerns about steep increases in assessed home values. Both speakers said their homes’ assessed values "doubled" from last year to this year. Alexander also noted that the agenda included elected officials' salaries for discussion in the executive session and "hoped no raises would be given to the Commissioners," noting that commissioners make about $29,000, he said.
Peterson additionally raised a facilities-maintenance issue, noting a broken urinal in the men’s restroom that he said has been unrepaired for some time. Earlier in the meeting resident Marilyn Sturgeon asked about enforcement of any fireworks ban; Chairman Michael McNamee said law enforcement (the Sheriff’s Department and police departments) would be responsible for enforcing any ban as the county approaches July 4.
