Selectboard approves $1.45 million contract to Kings Trucking for multiple road repairs despite mixed references

The Marshfield Selectboard voted to award a $1,448,000 contract for work on Holt Road, Pigeon Pond Road, Maple Hill Road and Laird Pond Road to Kings Trucking and Excavating. Engineer Tyler Billingsley said Kings was the low bidder, reported one excellent reference and one that was only "ok," and noted the company appears on the VTrans prequalified list. Justin Campbell moved to award the contract, Richard Baker seconded, and the board recorded the vote as "all in favor." Justin signed the contract.
Billingsley told the board he had not checked references for the next-lowest bidder and that the town had not asked Kings to return to touch up work on a prior job when concerns arose; despite that, he considered the references sufficient to recommend award. The minutes show the board accepted his recommendation and executed the contract during the meeting.
