Airport manager reports terminal renovations; VDoA study shows big economic gain at Hummel Field

Steven Smiley, senior planner with the Virginia Department of Aviation, presented findings from an updated Commonwealth Aviation Economic Impact Study using 2024 data. Smiley said Hummel Field experienced the largest estimated increase in economic output in the Commonwealth—over 723% from 2016 to 2025—attributed in part to runway realignment and extension; a technical report was expected to be released in April.
