Auditor's Office renovation moves forward; board weighs generator, canopy options

Farnsworth Group architect Kristofer Orth presented design-development guidance for the 100 Nile Kinnick building Auditor's Office renovation and asked the board for final direction. Orth said the existing generator at 902 Court Street has capacity to serve the entire building but that the current design provides backup only to voting areas to avoid the cost of a second transfer switch. He said Farnsworth is consulting the State Electrical Inspector to determine if a single transfer switch could be an acceptable alternative.
Orth also discussed removing the existing entry canopy. He explained that removing the canopy would permit reconfiguring accessible parking to meet ADA standards while retaining one or two standard spaces for curbside voting; removal would also reduce future maintenance even though some concrete demolition would be required. Chair Julia Helm expressed support for the building design and for including a generator; Supervisor Kim Chapman commented that the canopy adds character and suggested relocating the generator to create parking. The board voted by consensus to move forward with adding Alternates 5 and 6 to bid.
