Road and Bridge Director Kurt Demel reported that the Kansas Department of Transportation has set a start window of June or July 2026 for a Highway 56 bridge replacement project heading to Garfield and that the projected closure will last approximately 140 to 150 days.
Demel said KDOT will meet with Pawnee County and the City of Larned to discuss detour routes and that relocations of a phone line and Mid-West Energy facilities may be required. He cautioned the start date could shift depending on the results of environmental reviews. "KDOT has a start date of June or July of 2026, and the bridge will be closed for approximately 140 to 150 days," Demel said.
No formal county action was recorded; staff will participate in KDOT coordination and detour planning with city officials.
