Board debates asking legislature to let Carmel voters decide on trustee term limits

Vice President Curzio outlined a request that the board send a letter to local legislators asking them to sponsor a home-rule bill allowing the district to place a referendum on term limits on the Carmel ballot. Curzio said the district had sent a similar letter during the 2022–23 legislative session and that Senate bill S6093 had been introduced previously but did not pass out of committee.
"As the law is currently written, school boards cannot put on the ballot a question of whether or not there should be term limits," Curzio said. He emphasized the proposal would not itself impose term limits but would allow voters in Carmel to decide. Trustees debated the idea: some said allowing a referendum returns the question to voters, while others said term limits would remove experienced volunteers from service and that regular elections already provide accountability.
The board did not vote on formal endorsement of term limits; rather, Curzio sought direction on whether to draft another letter to legislators. A preliminary show of hands indicated some support for drafting language and soliciting community input before a future vote.
