Britney Carmel urges board to clarify paused hiring process after interviews

Britney Carmel, a Carmel Central School District graduate and current educator and coach, told the board that several candidates who interviewed, completed demonstration lessons and accepted job offers were later asked to reapply and have not been told whether they will have positions in September. "Some of these educators applied for a career, interviewed, did demo lessons, received job offers, accepted job offers, and then were told to reapply," she said, and named July 10 as a date when some positions were reposted.
Board members responded with apologies and explanations. Trustee Jesse Torpey and others said a newly formed hiring committee is a temporary governing body meant to standardize the district's hiring process and is not responsible for selecting individual candidates. The superintendent said principals "informed me that they told everyone who was involved in any process about the pause" and added that hiring will continue over the summer with a goal of completing most hires at the next board meeting and some by August 23.
Trustees acknowledged the timing was unfortunate and promised to ensure applicants receive notice. The board asked the superintendent to follow up with anyone who participated in hiring processes and has not heard from Human Resources. The board did not take additional formal action at the meeting but placed several hires on the evening's personnel agenda.
The public comment raised both personnel-management and student-impact concerns: Carmel said the change in procedure affected educators who had left previous jobs or devoted personal time to interviews, and she asked whether students and class rosters would be affected. The superintendent offered to meet with any commenter who wanted a more detailed explanation of the process.
