Chair Ivan Beattie explained that state law requires the board to make an appointment "forthwith," meaning immediately, and described the alternative of holding a Special Town Meeting to elect a replacement. Members discussed whether an appointee chosen this year would be allowed to complete Cutler's unexpired term, which runs through March 2028. Town Manager Scott Murphy said he would consult attorneys and the Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT) for guidance.
Several members of the public spoke during the period addressing the vacancy, and the board agreed to accept written Letters of Interest from candidates with a deadline of March 24. The board said it would interview applicants and then decide whether to appoint or to pursue a special election at a later date. The next regular Selectboard meeting is March 17, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
