Juneau officials urge evacuation planning as basin fill window approaches; sandbags and hotline available

"We are recommending evacuation of the entire area," the manager said, urging residents to sign up for emergency alerts and use sandbag resources. City staff listed preparedness steps, including a flood hotline at (907) 500-0890, a text-alert signup (text CBJ to 38276) and repeated weekend sandbag distribution events supported by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Officials said the city has staged pumps and Army Corps operators at strategic locations and will conduct door-to-door notification in neighborhoods at risk. Staff emphasized that businesses in the evacuation zone should plan to close during a release window and that transit service may be suspended to keep roads clear for emergency responders.
The manager said the city has distributed roughly 7,500 sandbags at recent events and that pump infrastructure has been positioned for rapid deployment; residents were asked not to tamper with pumps. Emergency-management staff and the communications team said the flood preparedness web page contains details on sheltering, parking and volunteer opportunities.
The assembly did not take a formal vote on evacuation powers; staff framed the briefing as an urgent public-safety update and asked the public to follow official channels for real-time instructions.
