Board hears details on free sports physicals and the new ECG requirement

AdventHealth officials reported a near‑sellout of free sports‑physical appointments and extensive ECG screening efforts at a July 28 school board workshop. Eric Nason, AdventHealth director of partnership operations, said the multi‑day event offered nearly 1,880 appointment slots with about 1,500 students attending (an ~80% show rate) and that ECG screenings reached roughly 92% of students who showed up for physicals this year.
Nason framed ECG screenings as lifesaving and noted that “1 in every 300 students have a cardiovascular abnormality that's only found through ECG.” He added that Florida has a statewide ECG requirement for students participating in high‑school sports that went into effect July 1, and AdventHealth has been preparing families and the district for compliance. “We do offer it obviously free at our physicals,” Nason said, while also pointing to low‑cost ECG options at pediatric cardiology offices and to AdventHealth’s discounted Centricare offerings for Volusia students.
Board members pressed on access for band members and other student groups; AdventHealth said the group is exploring additional event days, extra hours, and transportation partnerships to expand capacity and urged volunteers to support operations.
