Board members of the George Washington Carver Community Center presented a proposed two-story annex to council on July 21 that would add classrooms, meeting rooms, a kitchen for small banquet events and an ADA entrance to the front of the facility. Executive Director Charmaine Bazemore said the project would be funded through the Community Facilities Fund and would increase parking from roughly 19 spaces to about 27.
Bazemore described a layout with flexible partitioned classrooms on both floors and a shared calendar for rental use by area organizations. "This will give us the opportunity to do banquet-style events on a smaller scale," she said, adding the center has engaged a local architect and project manager and hopes to break ground in spring next year if zoning and land-development approvals proceed. Board members Erica Wharton, Trina Allison and Laura Smith attended to request council support before the group appears before the zoning hearing board and the land-development process.
Council members expressed support for the educational and recreational uses; the presentation was informational and carver representatives said they will return with formal zoning and land-development applications as the process advances.
