Planning & Zoning reported that the city’s future land‑use map is on its third round of edits to reflect anticipated development and Smithfield‑related growth. Council members described outreach to neighboring landowners and discussed annexation to control development along the corridor near an eventual interchange at County Road 130.
One council member said the goal is to annex parcels to control what uses occur near the interstate and to shape future commercial and residential build‑out. Staff noted that more detailed traffic and build‑out studies will be required as projects advance, and that the council should review the major‑street plan and truck‑routing policy in tandem with the land‑use changes.
The council encouraged residents to engage with P&Z when those topics come before the board and scheduled further discussion at the next Planning & Zoning meeting.
