Veneta EDC considers online renewals, public directory to improve $25 business registration compliance

Management Analyst Jacob Thode told the committee the city currently lists about 121 registered businesses within city limits; approximately 75 have renewed for the current year and about 40 renewals remain incomplete. The annual registration fee is $25.
Thode said the current paper-based process consumes staff time relative to the fee and asked the committee for input on whether to continue the existing approach. Chair Herb Vloedman said "business licensing is a standard expectation across jurisdictions" and supports maintaining licensure but suggested surveying other cities for compliance strategies. Community Development Director Kevin Urban proposed publishing an annual public webpage listing licensed businesses to provide tangible marketing value for registrants and to help staff refer residents to licensed providers.
Member John Tribolet said an online renewal option with credit/debit payment would significantly improve his likelihood of timely renewal. The committee supported exploring whether the permitting software includes a portal to streamline renewals and reduce staff burden and asked staff to identify and work toward compliance for unlicensed businesses operating in the city.
