Board issues spring-thaw travel advisory, coordinates FEMA and disaster response
Summary
After spring flooding the commissioners issued a travel advisory limiting rock roads to local traffic and pursued FEMA and other disaster assistance. The board created a Disaster Fund and coordinated with FEMA and SBA in later months.
In March 2019 the board convened an emergency teleconference to address deteriorating road conditions caused by thaw and rainfall. Commissioners released a public advisory asking residents to limit travel on rock roads, urged school districts to use alternate routes, and asked residents to avoid heavy equipment use on rural roads while thaw conditions persisted.
Over the following months the county engaged FEMA representatives and state agencies to document damage and pursue public assistance. County officials later created a Disaster Fund to manage immediate expenditures while FEMA reimbursement and grant applications were prepared. Emergency management staff and the board coordinated public outreach and held FEMA information sessions; the board also approved the regional interlocal group to improve planning and exercises for future events.
The board emphasized that restrictions were temporary and aimed at preserving road surfaces and public safety during the spring thaw until ground conditions stabilized.
