The Nemaha County Board of Commissioners approved multiple personnel actions across late 2019. The board appointed a county public defender under a four-year agreement and set contract compensation for the term. After the resignation of longtime County Clerk Joyce Oakley in November, commissioners appointed Deputy County Clerk Diane Johnson to serve as county clerk effective November 9, 2019 for the remainder of the unexpired term.
During November the board held focused hiring interviews and offered employment for a full-time road department position and a building-and-grounds custodian, contingent on standard pre-employment screening. The board also approved various committee and agency appointments during the year (hospital board reappointments, advisory seats and representatives to regional bodies) and confirmed a part-time weed superintendent and other ad-hoc appointments.
Commissioners discussed the limits of authority for appointments and directed staff to complete contracts and onboarding paperwork. Several votes on appointments were unanimous by roll-call.
