Newbury committee plans extra sorting, signage and temporary staffing as recycling center is reconfigured

Committee members on April 18 discussed operational changes required if the Able Waste dumpster is removed and the recycling containers are shifted to make room for fire-station construction. Jeff McKelvey said the loss of the dumpster will require residents to do more self-sorting; the Committee discussed replacing boxed sorting with a series of barrels for glass and metals such as aluminum and tin.
The Committee concluded that the new sorting rules will likely require public outreach and signage. Members agreed to contact NEKWMD about available resources for educating residents. The Committee also proposed hiring a second attendant to assist with additional sorting and traffic direction during the transition; the Selectboard must approve any new hire. The group set a goal to have the temporary reconfiguration in place by May 17, 2025.
