New Haven holds public hearing on amended Town Plan ahead of March vote

The New Haven Selectboard opened a public hearing on the amended Town Plan on Jan. 6, 2026, with Chair John Roleau presiding. The Addison County Regional Planning Commission required several additions for regional approval — an Element 2 land use plan and map, renaming the Habitat Map to a "Forest Block Map" with a description of forest blocks, an Element 7 Implementation Plan, and an Element 8 Statement of Compatibility — all of which have been incorporated into the amended plan. The plan with highlighted changes is posted on the town's official website.
Planning Commission member Kathy Cahill told the board that "there are only minor changes to the plan," and Vice Chair Marie Jewett thanked the Planning Commission for its efforts. The Selectboard noted that while a duly adopted plan can guide development and serve as evidence in Act 250 and Section 248 hearings, only municipalities with regionally approved plans are eligible for Municipal Planning Grants. The board indicated the amended plan will be placed on the Town Meeting warning to go to voters by Australian ballot on March 3, 2026. The Selectboard will review and approve the Town Meeting warning at its Jan. 20, 2026 meeting.
