Mayor Paul Seo said he recently spoke with Captain Guerrero and reported that crime in the city is down about 40% year-to-date, and he credited proactive staff engagement, resident reporting and coordination with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD).
"Crime is down about 40% in the city, which is great," Mayor Seo said. He added the city created a public safety division to lower crime, address hazard mitigation and handle traffic-safety measures; the mayor said the division will include public-safety liaisons who act as city representatives and free up LASD to focus on core policing.
Mayor Seo said the city expects full staffing of the public safety division in the coming months, allowing liaisons to be "eyes and ears" in the community. He did not provide underlying crime-statistics reports or specific time ranges for the 40% figure and attributed success to increased resident engagement and staff coordination.
