Selectboard hears warning: Dog Team Bridge deteriorating, replacement could cost millions

Town officials told the New Haven Selectboard on Jan. 20 that the Dog Team Bridge has been deteriorating for years and that replacement would be exceptionally costly. Road Commissioner Bruce Many and Treasurer Julie Bessette met with VTrans staff Jim Cota and David Haskins to discuss needed work; the meeting record states that full replacement would cost "millions."
Selectboard member Mike Audy said he had raised the bridge’s condition at the Addison County Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Committee but that the bridge has not been prioritized by regional planning, reducing the likelihood of securing grant funding. Treasurer Julie Bessette said she will contact VTrans about options moving forward, including potential state assistance or phased repairs to extend the bridge’s service life.
The board also heard that winter road salt inventory has been largely consumed this season because of repeated small storms and that the town will need to begin using reserve salt supplies; regional supply shortages were noted.
