Mayor Paul Seo said the City Council opted not to place a proposed golf tax on the November ballot after councilmembers and staff raised concerns the levy could reduce rounds and harm local businesses.
"A lot of our residents play golf," Mayor Seo said, explaining that the council preferred to do additional homework and a cost–benefit analysis before moving forward. He said the city worried an increase could drive away customers and leave the city no better off financially.
The mayor characterized the decision as fiscal prudence: staff will research the likely effects on play and revenue and the council can bring the proposal back if analysis supports it. He did not supply a timeline for when staff will return with findings.
