Road engineer recommends SIMS pricing option; commissioners ask about budget impact

Heath Sexton, Chilton County road engineer, described two new pricing plans from Diversified Computer Services for the county’s SIMS road-management software and recommended the first option for its lower long-term ongoing rate and unlimited mobile users.
"I would recommend the 1st option for the immediate so we'd have the, the lower rate ongoing in the future," Sexton said. Commissioners asked about current costs and budget treatment; Sexton said the county currently pays about "$750 a month" and that the increase had been included in the proposed budget staff submitted.
Commissioners also asked whether the county is using the software to its full extent. Sexton said SIMS tracks work orders, phone numbers, road numbers, daily activities and can produce reports; he cautioned that adding more granular geotracking or per-employee productivity entries increases data-entry workload and could require additional staff time.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the recommended pricing option unless the commission directs otherwise and will include the increased cost in the upcoming budget for formal consideration.
