District staff reviewed multiple policy updates during the meeting. On Policy 508 (extended-school-year services), staff said the only substantive change clarified that a temporarily placed nonresident student who comes with an IEP and qualifies for ESY may receive district ESY services. Regarding Policy 509 (enrollment of nonresident students), staff said wording and legal references were revised and that the district retains the right to end open-enrollment for students deemed habitual truants.
Policy 535 (service animals) received notable attention: staff explained the update prohibits charging additional fees to someone who brings a service animal to attend an event or program and limits staff questions to two types — whether the animal is required because of a disability and what work/task the animal performs. "If they do come in, there's only 2 questions that you can ask," staff said; "You can ask if the service animal is required because of the disability... And then you can also ask what worker task is the service animal providing." The board moved the second readings and approved some policy updates where indicated.
