Officials praise turnout at community event; local businesses report mixed results

Tourism staff said the event was “incredible” and estimated roughly 300 people attended, including visitors from Denver, Flagstaff and Evanston. “We probably had close to 300 people in the park,” one tourism staffer said. The event included food, games and museum visits and organizers said it ran about three hours.
Not all local businesses reported gains. One resident/business owner told the commission his business was down substantially compared with last year, saying “His business was down over 50% this weekend,” and attributed some of the decline to higher gas prices and other economic factors. Commissioners discussed visitor dispersal patterns and noted that lack of fireworks in Dutch John and nearby attractions influenced how crowds distributed around the lake and river.
Upcoming events include the Cow Country Rodeo and an archery shoot scheduled for the 25th; tourism staff said organizers are evaluating whether some events should be repeated annually based on attendance.
