County staff explained changes to URS contribution rates: the public-safety employee contribution rose to 5.98% (an increase of 1.25 percentage points), while regular employees saw a 1.0% reduction in the employer’s retirement cost. Commissioners discussed options to mitigate employee impacts and how the county could cover the public-safety increase.
One commissioner moved that the county pick up the additional 1.25% for public-safety employees (totaling $1,426.76 under current staffing assumptions); the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners also moved to reallocate the 1.0% employer-rate reduction for regular employees into 401(k) deposits for eligible employees; that motion was similarly seconded and approved. HR and payroll were asked to prepare an explanatory letter to employees and to implement the deposit changes.
Commissioners noted the pickup is effectively a recurring personnel cost and cautioned that staffing increases could raise the county’s obligation in future budgets; staff was asked to monitor long-term fiscal impacts and to prepare communications that explain the change to employees.
