Board members pressed for transparency and an odd-numbered panel to avoid tie votes; members proposed including an administrator and one at-large community member drawn from a volunteer pool or random selection to reduce conflicts of interest. Concerns were raised that board members should not serve on hiring panels when they have conflicts; the proposed approach leaves selection of the at-large member to the pool and will allow removal for conflicts such as family relationships.
The board indicated the hiring committee language will be included in the draft policy and that the superintendent or designee will finalize selection mechanics before legal review.
