Council removes annual renewal for senior property tax relief program

The St. Charles County Council approved Ordinance 5501 on July 13, removing the annual renewal requirement for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Property Tax Relief Program.
Michelle McBride, Collector of Revenue, explained the ordinance change will allow eligible seniors to remain enrolled automatically unless they move to a new residence. "To remove the renewal requirement the ordinance would need to be amended," McBride said, adding staff worked with counsel to ensure renewals are automatic.
Council Chair Mike Elam called for the roll call vote after brief discussion; the ordinance passed unanimously, 7-0. Supporters said the change reduces unnecessary burdens on seniors and county staff; implementation details will be administered by the Collector's office.
