Gilmanton transfer station reports baler failure and aging backhoe; grants explored

Transfer Station Manager Alex DeCoste told the Selectmen that recent overflow at the transfer station occurred during high-volume periods when cardboard was not broken down or was placed in the compactor incorrectly, and that 'the baler was broken.'
DeCoste said the John Deere backhoe is a 2004 machine with more than 7,000 hours and multiple mechanical issues (hydraulic leaks, seals, hoses, tires and winter-operating concerns); he said continued repairs were not considered feasible and that grant opportunities are being explored for equipment needs.
