Neighbors warn River House expansion could strain Virginia Highlands Park; PRC to tour site next month

Gary said their primary worry is the impact of an "infusion of approximately 5,000 new residents" on park capacity and programming, while noting that capital budget funds for park restoration would not be available until 2032.
Commissioners agreed a site visit during next month’s PRC meeting at Virginia Highlands Park would be useful; Marco Rivera said DPR staff and other experts would attend the walk-through to address programming and maintenance questions and examine parcels donated as part of the project. Gary also noted that some donated acreage is separated from the park by a busy road and has a steep slope, limiting reuse for recreation.
The PRC asked staff to coordinate the on-site review and indicated members may take a quick walk to view donated parcels adjacent to Joyce Street before returning for the meeting discussion.
