Interim superintendent outlines reading initiative and reports slight enrollment gain

Interim superintendent Mr. Carlock presented the district's vision and a preliminary reading initiative focused on strengthening core literacy instruction, targeted interventions, early identification and family engagement. He said the reading plan is a conceptual model that emphasizes foundational word-recognition skills and language comprehension as the basis for later reading-to-learn development. "Pine Bluff School District will be a safe, supportive, and student centered community where every child is believed in, challenged, and empowered to overcome barriers," he told the board.
As part of the superintendent report he also gave an enrollment update, saying the district had 2,836 students at the end of the prior year and currently counts 2,852 students, a net increase of 16. He tied enrollment figures to staffing decisions and explained the state staffing matrix is used to determine full-time-equivalent positions while also allowing local needs to drive exceptions.
