Council discusses rental fees and repairs for city‑owned former church
Summary
Mabton councilmembers reviewed a draft facility‑use policy and possible rental fees for a returned church building, discussed needed repairs (stairway, lighting, floor leveling), insurance and deposits, and floated fee ranges of about $250–$300 for nonprofits and $300–$400 for private events.

The Mabton City Council on Nov. 25 considered a resolution to adopt a facility-use policy and application for a city‑owned building returned to the city (described in the packet on page 24). Chair opened the item and outlined that the property formerly used as a church has been painted inside and has had some windows replaced, but needs additional repairs including an outdoor stair and a front light. "The floor… will need to be elevated because it is slanted," the Chair said, describing limits on types of events the space can safely host.
Councilmembers asked whether the city should set different fees for nonprofits, private parties and events with music. One councilmember said the group had previously discussed a nonprofit rate in the range of $250 to $300 and a higher rate for private parties. There was consensus that the slanted floor likely precludes dancing and that a separate surcharge might apply for a band or music. The council also discussed using a deposit equal to the rental amount to cover damages and noted the city has insurance for the building while renters would need their own coverage for events.
Members raised accessibility and safety questions about an interior stair that appears steep and flagged the need to check code compliance and fire‑safety evaluations performed by the fire chief. Staff said public works has begun painting and that staff will return with a printed fee schedule and categories for the council to consider. The item was left for further refinement and staff follow‑up on insurance, deposit amount, and specific repair estimates.
