Union City to continue search for one part-time police officer after candidate no-shows

Union City Police Chief David Pernice told the Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate previously approved for a part-time position has not responded to attempts at contact, and the department will continue its search.
"I have tried to make contact but have had no luck. I am assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said. He told councilors he would reach out to the consortium (a list of 32 candidates), check with the Civil Service Commission about scheduling oral exams and send letters to prospective applicants. The council agreed to proceed with hiring one part-time officer rather than two, which the chief said had been his longer-term preference.
The update was given during the police chief’s report; no formal motion was required beyond the council’s consensus to continue recruitment. The matter may return to a future agenda after the Civil Service Commission schedules exams or additional candidates are identified.
