The Union City Borough Council voted unanimously Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part-time police officer. Councilor Matt Joyce moved the hiring motion and Councilor Osborn seconded; the motion carried with no recorded opposition.
Mayor Robert Wolf had opened discussion by stressing the importance of maintaining a police department in the borough and recommended adding part-time coverage. Councilor Riley Cross and Councilor Joyce said a part-time hire would reduce costs and expand coverage; Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the budget previously had at least $33,560 allocated for wages and benefits and that actual cost would depend on the number of hours the officer works. The personnel selection originated from the certified civil service list and the candidate indicated availability for part-time work.
