Board authorizes bids for Claymont High School fire alarm replacement after reports of system failures

Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Bradon Smith told the board the Claymont High School fire alarm system is at end-of-life, has been triggering spontaneously and that replacement parts are increasingly hard to find. The board authorized advertising bids for replacement of the high school fire alarm system.
Smith also outlined several weather-exposed facility issues at the Intermediate School: frozen lines that broke a sprinkler line (requiring emergency repair), a failing 20-year-old air handler for the gym/cafeteria (board asked whether to replace with newer larger equipment or install smaller electric heaters), a boiler repair and a rooftop unit repair. The board authorized staff to advertise bids for the high school alarm; no vendor was selected at this meeting.
The authorization to advertise bids was part of the superintendent’s recommendations and passed as part of a larger consent motion that included personnel and policy items. The board did not vote on the scope or amount for replacement at this meeting; staff were directed to proceed with the procurement process.
