East Elementary renovation on track for classrooms; addition pushed to December

Cheboygan Area Schools’ contractors told the board that major interior work at East Elementary is making steady progress and that classroom finishes are being prioritized so students can return on the scheduled Sept. 8 start date.
The project manager said crews started in April and have completed steel installation and extensive interior work. “We’re anticipating substantial completion by August 14, which will give us a little bit,” the project manager reported to the board. Contractors said mechanical systems and masonry work are nearly complete in the South Wing; tile and epoxy work on restroom floors and marker boards are being installed this week.
Construction of the planned addition has been delayed by weather; concrete pours were postponed but inspectors have signed off on interior work. The project team said the addition’s final completion target remains in December and that crews will push to catch up where possible. Board members were briefed on schedules for painting, cabinet procurement and boiler installation, and were told to expect weekly photo updates on the district website and a regular Tuesday walkabout for board members and the public.
