Board approves MD-2 overlay on additional 160 acres to allow underground mining

Sweetwater County commissioners unanimously approved Resolution 26-07-Z-02 to add an MD-2 mineral development overlay to roughly 160 acres, extending underground-mining allowances consistent with adjacent properties. County planner Cassie Brown said the request ‘‘is very similar’’ to the prior item and reiterated there are no surface disturbances proposed at this zoning stage; the planning and zoning commission recommended approval 3–0.
Cassie Brown noted YDOT’s comment that, while there is no objection to the zoning change itself, future project proposals will need to include access details, utilities, and subsidence analysis for State Highway 372 impacts. The board held a public hearing with no speakers and approved the map amendment unanimously.
