Committee advances bill to restore voting rights to Dennis Hopkins amid record-query request

Senator Whaley presented Senate Bill 3400 to restore voting rights to Dennis (recorded variably as Hawkins/Hokens/Hopkins), telling the committee the subject was convicted of grand larceny in 1998 but since has been a "tremendous asset to the community," active in church life and heading the water maintenance department in Potts Camp. "He is actually the head of our, water maintenance department in our little small town of Potts Camp, known as Superman around there," Whaley said.
The committee advanced SB 3400 by voice vote. Later in the session a committee member flagged an anomaly in the NCIC report associated with the Hopkins/Hokens name — immigration-violation entries and multiple aliases — and the chair recommended asking MDOC or the Department of Public Safety to run a clarifying report before the bill goes to the floor.
