The Cedarburg City Council voted to replace the transition sump that houses fuel at the Public Works garage, approving payment from the Public Works Capital Improvement Fund after staff reported leaks and an alarm condition.
Staff presented a contractor quote in the meeting packet but said the city could reduce costs by having Public Works crews pour the concrete. Staff cited a reduced in‑house cost of $11,004.45; during the motion a council member moved to approve the project "for $11,445 from the Public Works Capital Improvement Fund." Mechanic Bill Hintz told the council, "If we push it off too long, we're gonna have bigger problems. Then we'll have a fuel leak or fuel spill and then the state and EPA's involvement," urging replacement now to avoid regulatory escalation.
Councilor [mover] made the motion to approve the work and the chair seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote and no opposition was recorded. Staff said the expense is unbudgeted and will come from the capital improvement fund balance.
The replacement project will remove the failing sump, demolish existing concrete and bollards, and rely on city crews for the concrete pour while specialized plumbing work would remain with contractors. The council did not set a further hearing; staff indicated the work will proceed following the approved funding and contract finalization.
